What is cross connection control program?

This is a combined cooperative effort between plumbing and health officials, waterworks companies, property owners and certified testers to establish and administer guidelines for controlling cross connections and implementing means to ensure their enforcement so that the public potable water supply will be protected both in the city main and within buildings. The elements of a program define the type of protection required and responsibility for the administration and enforcement. Other elements ensure continuing education programs.

State law Title 179 requires consumers of public water supplies to inspect their facilities no less than once every five years. Completing and returning this form fulfills that requirement.

16-118. WATER SERVICE; BACKFLOW PREVENTION. Since the Plumbing Code adopted by the City requires the installation of backflow prevention devices on certain types of plumbing fixtures, equipment or services to prevent contamination from nonpotable liquids, solids or gases being introduced into the potable water supply through cross connections or any other piping connections to the system, all City water customers having such backflow prevention devices, equipped with a test port, shall certify to the City Water Department on a form provided and available at the office of the City Water Department at City Hall, at least one (1) time annually that the backflow prevention device has been tested by a Nebraska Department of Health Grade VI Certified Water Operator. 16-119. WATER SERVICE; CUSTOMER SURVEY. All customers of the City Water distribution and supply system are required to do all things on their own premises which may be necessary for the protection of the public health and safety as determined by the City Utilities Superintendent, and at least one time every five (5) years shall report all potential backflow and backsiphonage hazards on their own premises, to the City Water Department on a survey form, provided by the City Water Department.
